Robert Menasse

Robert Menasse, born in Vienna in 1954, studied German language and literature, philosophy, and political science in Vienna, Salzburg, and Messina, and earned his Ph.D. in 1980 with a dissertation titled “The Type of the Outsider in the Literary World.” From 1981 to 1988, he taught at the University of São Paulo in Brazil; in 1999, he spent three months as a writer-in-residence in Amsterdam. Since 2011, he has curated a writer-in-residence program at the one world foundation in Sri Lanka. His works have been translated into numerous languages and have received many prestigious awards. Most recent publication: Die Lebensentscheidung (Suhrkamp 2026). Robert Menasse lives in Vienna as a freelance writer and (political) essayist.
