Milena Michiko Flašar, born in St. Pölten in 1980, studied German and Romance languages in Vienna and Berlin. She is the daughter of a Japanese mother and an Austrian father. Her novel Ich nannte ihn Krawatte (I Called Him Tie) sold over 100,000 copies, premiered as a play at the Maxim Gorki Theater, and won several awards. Among other honors, it was longlisted for the German Book Prize in 2012 and has been translated into numerous languages. Most recently, her collection of short stories Der Hase im Mond (The Rabbit in the Moon) and her essay Sterben lernen auf Japanisch (Learning to Die in Japanese) were published. The author lives with her family in Vienna.
