Foreign Parts – this is a place we do not know (yet), a place that is perceived as both tempting and frightening and whose conquest we preferably leave to literature, which takes over these explorations in our stead.
With Foreign Parts, Ilse Helbich has written a number of stories which – in the view of the 87-year-old author – miss foreign parts and, beyond that, everything that feels foreign to us: altogether, these stories cover the different stages of life without being really autobiographical. The mysteries and nightmares of childhood, the frightening events on the way to adulthood, family and relationships, and finally old age – constantly, inwardly and outwardly, we are confronted with the experience of the foreign.
»A blessing for literature.« (Die Presse)
»In her tales, Helbich achieves a tremendous effect with the elaborate combination of simple descriptions. She finds words for the unspeakable.« (Isabella Pohl, Der Standard)
